Along with the rest of the seminars we have reviewed from the likes of Dr. Andreo Spina, the Kinstretch seminar doesn’t fall short.
Kinstretch is a continuation of the Functional Range Conditioning certification course. In order to register for a Kinstretch course you must be a Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist.
Both courses focus on giving your body the prerequisite mobility to enhance your movement patterns in order to do all the stuff you want to do, while at the same time decreasing the risk of injury. If you want to know more about the FRC course, you can read more here.
Kinstretch by definition is a movement enhancement system that develops maximum body control, flexibility and usable ranges of motion. It is designed to be a group class that creates better articular health, mobility and movement needed for the demands of life, sport, exercise, running, hobbies and just about anything else you could think of.
So who can this be used for? Just about everyone, a 21 year old athlete or a 81 year old grandma; either way, if you have joints you need them to work well.
The classes work through the same principles as FRC, (BIOFlow and the Dynamic Systems Theory) but are run through base positions. A base position is a position in which you will work CARs, PAILs, RAILs, lift offs, hovers, kinetic stretching and a wide variety of other end range movement options to improve your overall movement potential.
The differentiating aspect that separates Kinstretch classes from other mobility and yoga classes are:
1) We do not use gravity to aid us into stretching
One of the main concepts of Dr. Andreo Spina’s philosophy is that we want to convert passive ranges of motion into active. By creating greater active range of motion you will be able to better enjoy the things you want to do while simultaneously decreasing your chances of injury. This decreased risk of injury comes from greater movement variance (the ability to move in different ways), so if something unexpected happened, such as rolling your ankle on a stick during a run your tissues would able to absorb more of those forces and hence be more resilient.
2) We move and strengthen through end ranges of motion
Injury happens when the forces acting on the body are greater then the forces it can create. By building strength at the end ranges of motion, and thus being able to produce more force there, we shift the curve and work towards preventing injury through that formula.
3) Build prerequisite movement
Unlike yoga and most movement based classes that are designed to be the desired choice of movement to improve your health, Kinstretch is something that fits into your daily life. It allows you to become more acquainted with your body and improve motor control and. Secondly, it helps build increased range of motion at all the joints in the body so that if you need it to move, you can do so with more ease.
Another great strength of Kinstretch is that it works very well to help bridge the gap between rehab and performance and vice versa, the gap between performance and rehab.
If you are working with a physical therapist Kinstretch classes can help tease out limitations throughout the rest of the body allowing you to build strength and articular resilience for when you return to your activities or life at full speed.
Same goes if you are working with a trainer, Kinstretch will help you find limitations in movement that could potentially hinder your performance.
All in all, Kinstretch is a worthwhile course to take as a fitness professional and a worthwhile investment in your health.
